米国　1929年の著作物がパブリックドメインに　初期版の「ポパイ」「タンタン」、ラヴェル「ボレロ」、ガーシュウィン「パリのアメリカ人」、ヒッチコック『恐喝』等

米国では、1929年に米国で発行された著作物の著作権の保護期間が2024年末を持って失効。2025年1月1日からパブリックドメイン（共有財産）となりました。米デューク大学パブリックドメイン研究センターは、新たにパブリックドメインに登録された著作物（文学、映画、音楽作品）を紹介しています。

キャラクターでは「ポパイ」と、「タンタンの冒険」の主人公「タンタン」がパブリックドメインとなりました。今回著作権が切れたのは「ポパイ」と「タンタン」のオリジナル・ヴァージョンです。

映画は、ミッキーマウスが初めて言葉を話した『The Karnival Kid』、アルフレッド・ヒッチコック監督映画『恐喝（原題：Blackmail）』、マルクス兄弟初の長編主演映画『ココナッツ』など。

音楽はラヴェルの「ボレロ（Bolero）」、ガーシュウィンの「パリのアメリカ人（An American in Paris）」、「雨に唄えば（Singin' in the Rain）」（1952年、この曲を翻案し主題歌ともなった同名のミュージカル映画が公開された）、ファッツ・ウォーラーの「浮気はやめた（ Ain’t Misbehavin'）」など。

なお、同センターで紹介されているのは、あくまでも米国での話で、著作権保護は国によって異なります。

米国では1998年に米国著作権法が改正され、それまで“発表後75年”に定められていた著作権保護期間が“発表後95年”に延期。今回パブリックドメインとなった作品は、もともと2005年にパブリックドメインになる予定でしたが、20年延期され、2025年1月1日からパブリックドメインとなっています。

また米国では音楽の録音物の著作権については別の法律があります。2022年、音楽近代化法という新しい法律の下、1922年末までに録音された音源はパブリックドメインとなりました。そして2025年、新たに1924年の録音もパブリックドメインとなりました。
