Rest In Peace to Mac Rebennack aka Dr John The Night Tripper. Sad news to hear of his passing last night. Dr John has been a huge influence on my lyrics, vocal delivery, stage presence, song writing, message, funkiness and just musical sensibility. My mother had his hit record In The Right Place and I found it in the basement in the day. To hear that clav come up on the title track was some kind of intense scary sound. That whole record really shaped a lot of what I wanted to say, how I wanted to sing it and what the message could be. Also his collaborative record Triumvirate with John Hammond and Mike Bloomfield was a favorite. Of course Gris Gris has been a huge influence. These records also opened me up to Allen Toussaint and the Meters before I even knew about them. In 1996 We got to spend an epic day in the studio in Philadelphia with Mac recording our Yeah It's That Easy record. We kept jamming tracks live and pulling up tracks for him to overdub. I'm not sure how many tracks we were supposed to cut but he easily cut on 11 songs. You can hear Mac on the title track, The Recipe, All the People and others. But his piano part on Yeah It's that easy Is badass. I will never forget opening the stage for him at @memphisinmay fest in the day. I was coming off stage and he was heading up. I said, "Yo! Mac" he said in his gravelly thick New Orleans rasp "get over here you skinny motherfucker" He pulled me over to him put his arm around me and said "look up in the sky - you see those stars? That what you is don't forget it". I said, "I'm trying Mac". He said, "I don't want to hear that 'trying' shit. You go do that shit. Be a star" then he took the stage.
