フランク・ザッパの公式ドキュメンタリー映画『Zappa』　本編クリップ映像「Barking Pumpkin Records編」公開

フランク・ザッパ（Frank Zappa）のオフィシャル・ドキュメンタリー映画『Zappa』。ザッパが設立したBarking Pumpkin Recordsについてスティーヴ・ヴァイ（Steve Vai）らが語る本編クリップ映像が公開されています



映画『Zappa』の監督は映画監督／俳優のアレックス・ウィンター。アレックスは『ビルとテッド』シリーズでビル役を務めたことで知られています。

アレックスは、ザッパの遺産を管理するザッパ・ファミリー・トラストの支援を受けてドキュメンタリーを制作。プロジェクトは2016年に発表され、資金調達のためのKickstarterキャンペーンも行われています。

アレックスと彼のチームは、ザッパのアーカイブにかつてないほどのアクセスが許可されており、何十年も保管され、一般には見られなかった何百時間もの資料から、苦労して映画を作り上げました。

映画には、フランクの妻ゲイル・ザッパ、そしてマイク・ケネリー（Mike Keneally）、イアン・アンダーウッド（Ian Underwood）、スティーヴ・ヴァイ（Steve Vai）、パメラ・デ・バレス（Pamela Des Barres）、バンク・ガードナー（Bunk Gardner）、David Harrington、Scott Thunes、Ruth Underwood、Ray Whiteなどといったザッパの音楽コラボレーターたちが出演します。

ザッパ・ファミリー・トラストのアーメット・ザッパは以前、米ローリングストーン誌に「この映画は、フランクが自身の言葉で語った、フランク・ザッパの革新的な人生を最も親密に、広範に考察したものです。アレックスが成し遂げたことは信じがたいほどです。この作品は決定的なフランク・ザッパ・ドキュメンタリーです」と語っていました。

監督のウィンターは声明の中で

「これまで取り組んだ中で最も野心的なプロジェクトで、映画自体の制作に数年を費やした上に、アーカイブの映像を調べるのも数年を要しました。これは典型的な音楽ドキュメンタリーではなく、この複雑なアーティストに命を吹き込むことを目的とした多面的な物語です。偉大な映画を制作してきた長い歴史を持つMagnolia Picturesは、ザッパにぴったりの場所です」

と話しています。

この映画は、特別な一夜限りの劇場イベントが11月23日に行われ、11月27日にはビデオ・オン・デマンドでの配信が開始されています。配給はMagnolia Pictures。

また映画『Zappa』のサウンドトラック・アルバムが発売されます。計69曲を収めたCD3枚組版は2021年2月19日発売、同じく計69曲を収めた180グラム重量盤アナログレコード5枚組ボックスセットは2021年5月7日に発売予定です。

21曲のストリーミング版はリリース済で、SpotifyやApple Musicで聴けます。

アナログ盤のボックスセットは、Zappa.com、uDiscover、Sound of Vinyl online stores限定でカラー・ヴァイナル（Smoke Vinyl）版も発売されます。

CD3枚組と180グラム重量盤アナログレコードに収録される計69曲のうち12曲は、ザッパ・アーカイブからの未発表音源です。
